Return to Monkey Island: Ron Gilbert announces new part of the cult series for 2022

It started with a supposed April Foole on the Blog Grumpy Gamer. Ron Gilbert, the clever head behind Adventure classics such as Maniac Mansion, Zack McKracken, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and of course The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: Lechuck’s Revenge, announced a successor to the latter cult series. A GAG, clear. Look at the date. Or not?

It goes back to Monkey Island!

Yesterday, on April 4, 2022, then surprisingly followed another post by Gilbert: “_I feel a little bad because of the April Fool’s feathers, so I got together a game on the weekend so that no one is disappointed.” Afterwards there was then the Official announcement of Publisher Devolver Digital, Lucasfilm Games and Gilberts Studio Terrible Toybox (Thimbleweed Park).

Return to Monkey Island Announced, Coming in 2022
Return to Monkey Island has apparently been in development for two years and should appear 2022. Also clear: The new story is linked directly to the end of Lechuck’s Revenge. The Curse of Monkey Island, the third part of the series, which was created in 1997 without Gilbert, but according to the series creator, but belong to the canon. This also explains why the demonic skull in the Teaser Trailer to see Return to Monkey Island:

What else is known?

In addition to Ron Gilbert, Monkey-Island-Verygestein Dave Grossman is responsible for script and game design. Only Tim Schaffer is missing to bring together the old band again. But he does not seem to be involved in development. But the music comes back from the “Lucasart’s composers” Michael Land, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian, who had already taken care of some earwums in the early 1990s.

In the English version we also meet an old acquaintance. Dominic Armato will once again take over the English speaking role of Guybrush Threepwood. Too bad: The German translation probably does not come from Boris Schneider-Johne this time. From 1987 to 1992, the game veteran worked as a translator for Lucasfilm Games / Lucasarts and thus shaped the humor of the German versions of Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion and Co.

So far, it is unclear when exactly Return to Monkey Island and on which platforms the adventure should appear. We provide these details as soon as they are known.
