Sony buys the Bungie studio (Halo, Destiny) for 3.6 billion dollars, Microsoft congratulates them
Two weeks barely after the acquisition of Microsoft Activision-Blizzard for the coquette $ 68.7 billion (roundabout at 70 do you want), it is the turn of Sony Interactive Entertainment to bomber the torso and Announce a big acquisition in turn. It was therefore Bungie that fell into the PlayStation Family Escarcelle on Monday, January 31, 2021 for an amount close to 3.8 thanks. A resounding ad on the PlayStation blog, with the beautiful illustration that goes with, and which says that redemption will not change the studio business model, which will remain totally independent. Bungie will therefore keep its independence, both in its direction and in its way of doing things. Basically, Bungie will remain the autonomous publisher that he became after leaving the Activision Skirts in 2019 after a separation that allowed the studio to leave with the license Destiny. In fact, it is no question of seeing destiny becoming a PlayStation exclusivity, the idea being to leave the studio the full powers and continue to work freely. Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment expressed on the PlayStation Blog:
I am absolutely delighted to announce that a new member will join the PlayStation family! I have been a fan of Bungie for many years. I admired and appreciated the games they create – and I have great respect for their ability to create worlds that players want to explore again and again.
Bungie creates games with exceptional technology that are extremely fun to play. They also have an unparalleled dedication to the communities that play their games, and everyone at PlayStation and PlayStation Studios will be delighted with what we can share and learn from them.
I spent a lot of time with the Senior Bungie team and it is clear that their experience and skills are very complementary to ours. We will be willing to welcome and support Bungie as they are growing, and I can not wait to see what the future reserves to this incredible team.
Bungie not becoming a member of the “PlayStation Studios” strictly speaking, what is the interest for Sony Interactive Entertainment to spend so much money? According to the Blog Playsation, the Japanese manufacturer wishes _ “use studio expertise in multiplatform development and live gaming services”, _ to expand the PlayStation brand around the world. That said, what is said today can obviously change and evolve over the years, especially since Bungie works on a new IP, including part of the funding (100 million euros) is injected by The Chinese of Netsease, who also holds a share of Quantic Dream. Of course, going back further in the bungie liability, we remember that the studio is at the origin of the Halo series, considered at its exit as the best console fps ever created. If the studio beat Microsoft Pavilion between 2000 and 2007, the studio separated from Microsoft, leaving the license in the hands of the American giant. It was in 2010 that Bungie announced its partnership with Activision for the creation of Destiny.
Faced with this ad, Microsoft reacted as early on Twitter in the person of Phil Spencer, congratulating Bungie but also Hermen Hulst, the Boss Playstation studios, and CEO of Guerrilla Games for such redemption. Fair play as usual.
